Webinar Description

Summary

  • **🛠️ Introduction to Ali Mafi’s Career in Construction: Ali Mafi shares his journey starting as a site engineer at Heathrow Terminal 4, expressing his love for the work despite the long hours. He later transitions into management roles but finds the job less fulfilling.
  • **💼 Shifting Focus to Project Management and Lean Thinking: After completing an MBA and gaining experience in various industries, Ali moves back into construction, joining a business improvement team where he begins to focus on Lean thinking and total quality management (TQM).
  • **🧠 Learning from Industry Experts: Encounters with thought leaders like Eliyahu Goldratt shape his approach to project management, particularly in terms of avoiding suboptimization and focusing on system-wide improvements.
  • **⏰ Importance of Project Time: Emphasizes that project time is the most valuable resource in construction projects, impacting nearly all performance criteria. Ali discusses how reducing project time can lead to better cash flow and overall project performance.
  • **📊 Critique of Common Project Management Practices: Criticizes traditional project management practices such as batching work and relying heavily on software that doesn’t effectively reduce project time. Advocates for real-time, collective decision-making and tracking project progress like a “satnav.”
  • **📝 Recommendations for Improving Project Management: Suggests practical steps for project managers, including measuring daily project performance, reducing batch sizes, and focusing on end-to-end project time rather than individual task times.

Insights Based on Numbers

  • 70 billion: Estimated daily cost of project delivery in the UK, highlighting the significant impact of project delays on overall costs.
  • 70-80%: Portion of project costs related to time, underscoring the importance of reducing project cycle times for cost savings.
  • 2.5 days per week: Average time lost in projects due to inefficient practices, leading to delays that are not recoverable.

About the Speaker

Ali Mafi commenced his engineering career in 1980 at Terminal 4, ascending to project management but found the role unfulfilling due to its lack of intellectual challenge and the prevalence of counterproductive behaviours. Seeking a change, he pursued an MBA and then entered the automotive sector, appreciating the efficient systems where components consistently matched their intended use.

Returning to construction, he joined Balfour Beatty Civils and Rail major projects and was soon part of the pioneering Business Improvement Team (BIT). This team explored and implemented various management theories and practices, including Total Quality Management (TQM) and Lean Thinking, and engaged with innovators like Eli Goldratt and Glenn Ballard. His innovative efforts continued with his contribution to Egan’s M4I as an innovation advisor, where he developed national construction KPIs, promoted off-site manufacturing, and initiated Lean Thinking workshops.

By 2004, he had co-founded Lean Thinking Ltd, joined Buildoffsite, and supported the first BIM trial project. His extensive involvement in over 200 projects globally is marked by his commitment to experimenting with and applying various improvement initiatives.

Later, as a member of the Productivity Insights Network (PIN), he focused on enhancing UK productivity across industries. Leveraging his vast experience, he developed the Timist™ project delivery system, designed to deliver the project in the shortest time by monitoring daily the time to completion like a sat nav, and measuring productivity and value in real time.
