To Plan or Not to Plan - Measure your Front End Planning

23rd January 2020 at 6 pm

University of Westminster, 35 Marylebone Road, London, NW1 5LS

Main Speaker: Tim Podesta

Tim will present on one of his project passions - front end planning - and the value to be gained from looking to benchmark and ‘Measure your Front End Planning'. The presentation will be based on Tim’s project and programme management expertise and experience from 35 years working for BP. Since 2016 he has worked as an independent consultant in the matter of projects, and in particular front end planning, benchmarking and investment analysis.

The content of the presentation will include a number of professional and personal stories which demonstrate various aspects of front end planning. There will also be an introduction to the Construction Industry Institute (CII) front end planning tool call the Project Definition Rating Index (PDRI).

Poor scope definition is recognized as one of the leading causes of project failure, resulting in cost and schedule overruns, and long-term operational issues. As a result, front end planning is one of the most important processes in the construction and operation of a capital asset. The PDRI methodology is proven to reduce risk in capital project delivery by promoting rigorous scope definition and a collaborative review process during front end planning resulting in better team alignment and improved transparency on identified gaps and risks.

The development of the PDRI by the Construction Industry Institute (CII) has been the result of benchmarking nearly $100 billion in capital projects. The results of the research show up to: 25% Cost Savings and 17% Schedule Reduction from using the PDRI process and measuring Front End Planning.

The presentation should be of interest to all project professionals. The objective of the talk is to enhance the understanding of project managers, and members of the project team involved in project services, project controls of the value and practices for front end planning of projects.
