Martin Price - The Renewal of Project Management
When we talk of uncertainty as a professional experience, we are likely to be talking
about ambiguities, unknowns and the doubts that we know and sense about a
project. If we then switch attention to our own discipline (or profession, as some
regard it), many are now reporting great lumps of uncertainty there too!

Change is Bound to Fail.
As an exciting diversion from our usual format, the London Committee of PMI enthusiastically presents a debate for October’s meeting, with the contentious motion “Change is Bound to Fail”. Together, we hope to understand the challenges presented by the need for change that drives many of our projects, and to share our experiences and theories so that we are better prepared for our next engagements. |

Penny Pullan In our July meeting, Mark Winter described 21st Century project management as an ever changing flux of events, situations and complex issues. Getting the right people together to tackle these is a key tool for the 21st Century project manager. This means workshops and meetings, and so often these are missed opportunities…
How many hours have you spent in project meetings which have dragged on and on?
How many times have you left a project meeting feeling that it wasn’t the best use of your valuable time?
Too many? Well, we can help you change all of that.
This session is aimed at giving you some key ideas and supporting tools to help you plan and run your project meetings and workshops. We want to help you to get the best out of everyone present in the least possible time. We will give you a whistle-stop tour of meeting planning, delivery and what happens afterwards. The presentation addresses the issues raised by PMI members at the May meeting in London – all 124 of them! |

Project Management Theory and
Practice - It’s broke! Let’s fix it.
Rethinking
Project Management
The gap between the practice and the theory of
project management is widening. Indeed, some argue that
the subject remains in ‘a 1960’s time warp’ and that
‘the underlying theory of project management is
obsolete’.
Funded by the UK Government,
Rethinking Project Management was initiated in 2004 to
research the areas in which mainstream project
management ideas need to develop...

The Power of Projects
Managing a project well requires a combination of skill and judgement, good communication and excellent control. What sets apart successful project managers from the rest is the way they balance the demands of stakeholders with the disciplines of project systems and the aspirations and capabilities of the project team. So what is it that makes professional project managers successful? Christopher explores the elements of judgement and control that go beyond method. by

Agile Project
Management - embracing Project Uncertainty
to yield Business Certainty
Projects are commonly embedded within a complex world
and typically subjected to chaotic influences. Agile
project management (not to be confused with agile
manufacturing) is proving to be capable of embracing
that uncertainty to yield more reliable and valuable
results for customers.
This presentation will provide some evidence to
support such assertions and we will analyse and reveal
some of the winning attributes of agile project
management. The presentation will also claim that
agile project management can lead to greater business
success and sustainability in the longer term. by

PMI Pie & Pint Networking Event - hailed a success
The London Committee of the UK PMI Chapter held its first Networking Event on 15th March. The event, colloquially known as the 'Pie & Pint' event, was held at the Tattershall Castle; a pub on a boat that is moored on Victoria Embankment on the Thames. This is the first of three Networking Events planned by the committee for 2007.
The event was well attended, with an international flavour given by members from such far flung locations as Australia and Columbia. Many connections were made by participants on the night, including new network colleagues, employment opportunities and ideas for dealing with real-life project issue. The event was also an opportunity for existing PMI members to meet others who had not previously attended any PMI meetings.
The next event is scheduled for 14th June and will likely be hosted at the same location. Please look out for further communications on the details of the next Networking Event, including information on the PMI UK website. You can also find out further information from the London Committee members at the monthly Evening Events held at the BT Centre. |

New Ways of Thinking about
Projects - beyond the Lifecycle Model
towards Complexity Models
One of the five directions for new project management
research recently identified by the "Rethinking Project
Management" Network, was to move from the simple life
cycle model of projects and the often unexamined
assumption that this is in some way the actual reality
"out there" in the world, towards the development of new
models and theories that recognise and illuminate the
complexity of projects and project management at all
levels.
Drawing on two talks given during the second half of
2006 to audiences at the PMI Research Conference in
Montreal, and to invited business leaders from the
Aerospace and Engineering Construction Industries at a
PMI Business Round Table in London, Dr. Terry
Cooke-Davies will explore both what some of these
theories might look like, and also what impact they
might have on our professional understanding of what it
means to struggle with the messy task of managing
complex projects in today’s world. by Terry

Universal
Disagreement - the many views of Programme
Management
Programme and project portfolio management have been
the subjects of new thinking and standards-setting in
recent years. Geoff has played a significant part in all
the major initiatives driving this 're-invention'.
The new PMI standards are part of this growth and
portray one view-point. The UK government interest in
the topic, through the Office of Government Commerce,
has published two versions of their popular standard
'Managing Successful Programs' and this is now
undergoing a refresh. The Association of Project
Management (APM) Body of Knowledge Version 5 covers the
topics and the APM plans a formal qualification in
programme management in 2007. Microsoft plans to launch
a new product, 'Project Portfolio Server 2007', in a few
months time.
This presentation does not assume that any one
interpretation is right or wrong, better or worse but it
does seek to explain these different perspectives and
the implications of the differences. by Geoff
