Dr Eamonn Malloy - “Green, Green, Amber, Green, Red”: How optimism bias tricks us over and over again, and what we can do about it.

Optimism bias is a psychological disposition to be excessively positive about the future outcomes of our actions. In the context of project management, this cognitive bias accounts to a large extent for the high probability that projects will cost more, take longer and deliver less benefits than originally forecast. In this presentation, I will outline the causes and consequences of optimism bias, as well as explore some additional explanations for our continuing failure to learn from past mistakes. I will also offer some potential cures, and describe how these are being put into practice on projects and programmes today.
