The Olympics experience:

One of our very own PMI UK volunteers helped out at the Olympics this year. Venu Yadlapati PMI, says it is was a once in a life time experience! He volunteered from the ‘Team London group’ that worked to support the Mayor of London and the Greater London authority. When he isn’t volunteering Venu works for for Mahindra Satyam and volunteers with the PMI UK in varying capacities with both Yohan Abraham, the volunteering Director and with the Director of Communications, Ommara Hussain.

In the closing ceremony, The President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) says ’We will never forget the smiles, the kindness and the support of the wonderful volunteers, the much-needed heroes of these Games’.These Games have proved that Britain is a great volunteering nation. More than 100,000 volunteers worked an average of 100 hours for Olympics. These volunteers came from a diverse range of communities and backgrounds.   They had teamed up with volunteering groups like Team London (GLA), Games makers (LOCOG) and Transport Ambassadors (TFL), Heathrow Volunteer group to create history!

Risk management or Risk leader?

Risk management is an important contributor to project and business success. The past few decades have seen growing consensus on the elements required to manage risk effectively, including an efficient and scalable risk process that can be tailored to the particular risky situation, an appropriate level of infrastructure to support the risk process, and skilled and competent people who know what to do and how to do it.

However risk management is much more than tools and techniques, processes and systems. One major contributor to effective risk management is a risk-aware supportive culture.Read more here..

Spot light :

We are privileged to have some very dedicated volunteers working for the chapter. To recognize your fellow volunteers send an email to the Director communications below and they will be featured in future Spotlights:

Todays spotlight focuses on the previous PMI UK President :--

  • Name and role:
Chris Field, Past President (President 2009-2011)
  • Why volunteer with the PMI?
The people! It's a fantastic way to meet great people who are equally passionate about what they do.  It's also a great way to build a global network.  Many of the folks I 've met through PMI are now good friends.
  • Career aspirations?
I'm particularly keen on the people / professional development aspects of being a project / program manager hence plan to pursue senior practice management / Director roles.
  • If you were not a project manager you would be?
Unemployed! All joking aside no matter what the role title I suspect I would be managing projects one way or another - remember there are lots of people managing projects who don't call themselves Project Managers.
  • How many project managers does it take to change a light bulb?
One, and a great team to help them.
  • What is your secret to project management success?
Four things: having fun, building a great team, giving them the space to be successful (no micro management here) and knowing your own strengths (and weaknesses) - leave the things you are weak at to those in your team who are better at it!  The job of a Project Manager is to create an environment in which their team can be successful.
  • Do you have a mentor or are you a mentor?
There are a few people I look up to and have learnt a lot from who I guess you could all mentors, but nothing formal.
  • How often do you read project management related literature?
Very rarely, I don't have the patience for much reading - see above.
  • Advice on how people can get more involved with PMI and one day perhaps become part of the board?
Speak to one of those already involved - we don't bite!

For all your communications comments get in touch with the Director of Communications on ommara.hussain@pmi.org.uk
