What are the major benefits of becoming certified with the PMI®?
We always hear how important getting a certification is, but what are the practical real–world benefits?
We spoke to some of our delegates, and from their feedback, we compiled this overview of the main benefits...
1. You Gain a Vital Skill: Project management is growing within organisations, and is now being seen as a core skill to have, rather than a niche area (which is the traditional view of project management).
2. You are Working to International Standards: There are around 370,000 PMP® certified around the globe. This is a massive benefit in itself. This means that all PMP®s are able to talk to each other in a common language and work to an international standard. For employers, it is invaluable for them to be able to recruit people from anywhere, that will already be on the same page.
3. You Have Higher Billing Potential: PMP® certified PMs, earn on average 20% more than the non certified Project Manager. It’s not a given, but being PMP® certified definitely makes people more marketable.
4.You are Making a Personal Statement: Taking the time and making the effort to get certified says something about your dedication to your profession and to improving yourself.
5. You Stay Relevant: The PMP® certification is especially useful to employers, as it requires that you invest in continuous professional development (which is a bit like getting constantly recertified). This ensures that your knowledge stays fresh and that project managers remain current and relevant.
6. You Earn Credibility: Getting certified gives you credibility and gives clients, managers and team members a great level of confidence in your ability to run smooth and successful projects.
Anyone that becomes PMP® or PgMP® certified, will not instantly become a great project manager overnight. Like all qualifications, it isn’t the qualification itself, but what you do with it that counts. To be a good project manager, you need to have good communication and interpersonal skills, and a lot of common sense! The PMO – Context is King Part 1
Published on 12th July 2010 - By Graham Shreeve on PMO Perspectives Blog
During a PMO seminar I had been running, great progress was being made on coming up with flash points relating to the value that the PMO can bring to their organisations. One of the delegates Luca had given some real insights into how their organisation attributed value to the useful work of the PMO, and revealed that the organisation’s main focus was on ‘efficiencies’. Luca also explained that he thought it was critical to understand the relationship that existed between the PMO and the organisation, and how they influenced each other.
